A reticle eyepiece turns a spotting scope into a measuring instrument. With a MIL reticle in the view, a spotter can measure the distance between point of aim and impact and pass it straight to a shooter using a MIL riflescope, or estimate range from a target of known size if a rangefinder is not available.

Why use a fixed 22x eyepiece?
A fixed power keeps the reticle subtensions accurate. 22x is low enough to give a wide 143-foot field of view and see bullet trace, yet high enough to read impacts at long range.

How should you set up the Athlon Ares G2 UHD 22x Ranging Reticle Eyepiece for glassing?
Set the tripod so the eyepiece sits at eye level when you are seated or standing comfortably; craning your neck ruins long sessions. Start at the lowest magnification to find animals, then zoom in only to judge them, because low power gives the brightest, widest and steadiest view. Focus on something at the same distance as your target, adjust the eyecup until the full image is visible without dark edges, and glass in a slow grid pattern from near to far. In heat shimmer, back the zoom off: a sharp image at 25x shows more than a wavy one at 60x.
